He felt that Chillingworth was meddling in something that should happened between him and God. Chillingworth said they would be friends again. A theme Hawthorne repeatedly states was that
nobody should have the right to look into another person's mind or soul.
Is this the idea that everyone has a direct connection with God and thereby doesn't need a medium? Or the idea of keeping things secret?
